In today’s world, social media is everywhere. It’s where we connect, express ourselves, and build our personal brands. From sharing photos on Instagram to posting videos on TikTok and engaging in discussions on Twitter, it feels like creativity is at the core of it all. But recently, I’ve started to wonder—could social media actually be stifling my creativity? Am I, like many others, slowly morphing into the same person, losing my unique spark in the process?

The Pros and Cons of Sharing My Intellectual Property on Social Media
When I think about sharing my work on social media, there are definitely some benefits:
Pros:
1. Global Reach: Social media allows me to share my creations with people all over the world. I can reach an audience that I would never have encountered in a traditional setting, which is an advantage. There’s also the potential for collaboration with others in my niche and diverse backgrounds.
2. Instant Feedback: I get feedback on my work almost immediately—likes, comments, shares. It helps me see what resonates with people and what doesn’t. This real-time feedback can be motivating and provide me with valuable insights into how I can improve.
3. Creative Inspiration: Social media can be a great source of inspiration. I get to see what other people are creating, and sometimes those ideas give me inspiration. It’s a place where creativity can flow freely and I can experiment with new styles or learn techniques.

Cons:
1. Pressure to Conform: However, I’ve noticed that there’s also a pressure to create content that fits into what’s already popular. The algorithm tends to push certain types of posts to the forefront, which makes me wonder if I’m focusing more on fitting in than on expressing myself authentically. I can’t help but wonder if I’m more concerned with getting likes than creating what’s in my heart.
2. Intellectual Property Risks: Sharing my work online also makes it more vulnerable to being stolen or used without my permission. It’s hard to protect my ideas when they’re floating around in the public domain. I can’t always track who’s using my content or if it’s being misused.
3. Chasing Validation Over Authenticity: I’ve also found that, at times, I’m more focused on getting validation from others than on staying true to my voice. It’s easy to get caught up in chasing likes and followers, and sometimes that leads me to create content that’s designed more for attention than for personal expression.
Am I Losing My Creativity on Social Media?

So, the big question: is social media turning us into something we’re not? Are we slowly losing our individuality, getting caught up in the noise of likes, trends, and viral challenges? I see it happening all around me—people, including myself, mimicking what works, rather than creating something truly unique.
Take TikTok, for example. The app thrives on trends, like dance challenges, lip-syncing videos, and viral memes. While these trends can be fun, they often require little original thought. Everyone’s doing the same thing, and I can’t help but wonder if creators are just blending in rather than standing out.
And with the way algorithms push popular content, it’s easy to feel like I need to conform to what’s getting the most attention. I see more and more creators adopting the same formats, trying to get their posts to go viral. It’s a bit discouraging because, sometimes, it feels like my creativity has to be shaped more by external expectations than by my own passions.
But Does It Have to Be That Way?
No, it doesn’t. The good news is that creators don’t have to lose our creativity or authenticity just because we’re sharing on social media. There are ways to stay true to ourselves and still engage with these platforms.

Here’s what I’ve been doing (and what I’m still working on) to keep my creativity intact:
1. Limit My Exposure to Trends: While trends can be fun and even inspiring, they don’t have to dictate everything I create. I’m trying to stay true to my personal style and focus more on experimenting with new ideas that feel genuine to me, rather than just riding the wave of what’s popular.
2. Diversify My Content Platforms: I don’t have to be confined to just one platform. I’m learning to spread my creativity across different spaces—whether it’s writing blogs, making YouTube videos, or even creating art outside of social media. That way, I can express myself in a variety of ways and not feel boxed in by one type of content.
3. Create for Myself First: I’ve started asking myself, Why am I creating this? Is it because I feel passionate about it, or is it just to get likes? I’m reminding myself that my creative process should be about personal growth, not external validation. When I focus on creating for myself, it feels more authentic.
4. Curate My Social Media Feed: I’m being more intentional about who I follow and what I engage with. I make sure my feed is filled with diverse perspectives, inspiring creators, and content that challenges me to think differently. By doing this, I will avoid getting caught in the trap of repeating what’s already out there.
5. Embrace Imperfection: One of the hardest things I’ve learned is that not everything has to be perfect. It’s easy to get caught up in curating a polished online presence, but some of my best ideas have come from simply being authentic, experimenting, and even failing along the way. Imperfection is part of the creative process.

In Conclusion
Social media doesn’t have to be a creativity killer. It’s all about how we engage with it. If we stay grounded in our “why”—the reason we create in the first place—then we can use these platforms to amplify our unique voice instead of blending in with the crowd. You don’t have to follow every trend or chase every viral challenge. True creativity comes from within, and it’s up to you to nurture it, even in a world that thrives on conformity.
So, the next time I post something, I’ll ask myself: Is this true to who I am? Am I adding something unique to the conversation, or just trying to fit in?
The choice is mine. And I’m excited to see where it takes me. Let’s further discuss our thoughts on conforming to social media trends in the comments below! XOXO 💋
