How To Start Scrapbooking!
Life can get so busy that we often put our hobbies and interests on the back burner. As on of my goals for 2025, I decided it was time to reconnect with the things that bring me joy, starting with an old favorite: scrapbooking. This creative outlet combines storytelling, photography, and design, allowing me to preserve cherished memories while indulging in a bit of artistic expression.
If you’ve been thinking about diving back into your hobbies, scrapbooking is a fantastic place to start. Here’s why—and a few simple tips to help you get started.
Why Scrapbooking?
Scrapbooking is more than just an artistic activity; it’s a chance to slow down, reflect on your favorite moments, and give them the attention they deserve. Whether it’s a family vacation, a milestone celebration, or even everyday moments, scrapbooking lets you relive and preserve these experiences in a way that’s uniquely yours.
For me, the tactile nature of cutting, gluing, and arranging photos and embellishments is therapeutic. It reminds me of the joy I felt when I first started, and it’s a welcome break from the digital world.
Getting Started with Scrapbooking
If you’re new to scrapbooking—or like me, getting reacquainted—here are some simple tips to help you ease into the process:
1. Gather Your Supplies
Start with the basics
• A scrapbook album (choose a size that feels manageable, like 8×8 or 12×12 inches).
• Acid-free paper to protect your photos.
• Adhesives (double-sided tape or glue dots work great).
• Scissors or a paper trimmer.
• Photos and mementos like ticket stubs, postcards, or pressed flowers.
• Embellishments like stickers, washi tape, and stamps (optional but fun!).
2. Choose a Theme or Story
Decide what your first scrapbook will focus on. It could be a recent trip, a special event, or even a year-in-review. Starting with a theme makes it easier to select photos and design pages.
3. Organize Your Photos
Sort through your photos and choose the ones that best tell your story. Don’t feel pressured to include every single picture—sometimes less is more.
4. Plan Your Layouts
Sketch a rough idea of how you want each page to look. Think about where the photos, text, and embellishments will go. You can keep it simple or experiment with layering and textures.

5. Add Personal Touches
Write captions or journal entries to accompany your photos. These small details make your scrapbook personal and meaningful.
6. Enjoy the Process
Don’t rush to finish your scrapbook in one sitting. Take your time and enjoy the creative journey.
Why It’s Worth It
Reconnecting with hobbies like scrapbooking isn’t just about the end result—it’s about carving out time for yourself and rediscovering what makes you happy. Scrapbooking has reminded me how much I value creativity, reflection, and the stories that make up my life.
So, if you’ve been putting off a hobby, now’s the time to dive back in. Dust off those supplies, gather your memories, and create something beautiful. You might just find, like I did, that it’s exactly what you needed.
